Fire Station Building Project - NEW (April/May 2025)

Fire Station Exterior w/ Dates

The Town of Rockland has completed two feasibility studies evaluating the need for a new Fire Station Headquarters at 99 Church Street, at the corner of Church and Howard Streets (i.e., the old Lincoln School site), as well as other alternatives to renovate the current station on Union Street.  This $33.2 million project was initially put before voters in the spring of 2023. Unfortunately, the proposed project did not pass at either the election ballot or at Town Meeting.

As a result, the Select Board, Fire Chief, and Fire Station Building Committee listened to voters and have come up with a new 'Plan B' that is smaller and less expensive.  The new project reflects a 21% reduction in cost, from $33.2M to $26.1M.

The Select Board has called a Special Election for Saturday September 13, 2025 as a result of the voter approvals received at the May 5, 2025 Annual Town Meeting for these projects. - THE PROJECT WAS APPROVED AT THE 9/13/2025 SPECIAL ELECTION.  CLICK HERE FOR THE ELECTION RESULTS (QUESTION # 2).

Fire Station Building Project

  • The Town of Rockland received voter approval for a new Fire Station Building Project at the 5/5/25 Annual Town Meeting.
  • The revised $26.1M building project reflects a 21% reduction in cost from the last proposal, with an average annual single family property tax increase of approximately $223/year, or $0.61/day for the length of the bonds (e.g., 30 years).

Fire Department Ladder Truck

  • The Town of Rockland received separate voter approval for a new Fire Department Ladder Truck at the same 5/5/25 Annual Town Meeting.
  • The average single family property tax increase for the $2M Ladder Truck would be a one-time cost of approximately $300, or $0.82/day, for one year only, before the building project tax increase occurs.

In order for either project to move forward, a proposition 2½ capital/debt exclusion must be approved by voters at the ballot/polls. Ultimately, it is the Rockland voters that will decide whether this project moves forward or not.
